FOR THE FIRST TIME, A LATVIAN RESTAURANT WAS AWARDED A MICHELIN STAR

21-11-2023

Max Cekot Kitchen became the first Latvian restaurant with a star in the world-famous guidebook.

The restaurant, located on Jelgavas Street, is described as a "surprisingly sophisticated place" in a former warehouse building on the outskirts of the city.

The Michelin team evaluates restaurants based on five criteria, which include the quality of ingredients, cooking technique, flavor profile, personality of the chef and consistency of food quality. These criteria help determine which restaurants deserve a Michelin star and recognition in the global restaurant community.

However, in addition to the Max Cekot Kitchen restaurant, the Michelin guide also includes other Latvian restaurants that, although they did not receive stars, still deserve mention. Among them are Pavāru māja, Tauro, Zoltners, Mo, 3 pavāri, Whitehouse, 36.līnija, John, COD, Le Dome, Chef's Corner, Barents Coctails & Seafood, Barents, Aqua Luna, Entresol, Ferma, Neiburgs, Tails, H.E.Vanadziņš , Akustika, KEST and Riviera. These establishments offer a variety of culinary experiences and are worth the attention of gastronomy lovers.

In addition, Michelin experts recognized the best Latvian sommeliers and chefs. Ivo Orlavs from Tauro received the award for best work with wine, and Nils Gevele from Ferma was recognized as the best young chef.

It is also worth noting that the Pavāru māja restaurant was awarded for sustainable development. This recognition highlights the importance of environmental responsibility and sustainable practices in the restaurant industry.

Michelin inspectors, evaluating Latvian restaurants, visited not only Riga, but also other parts of Latvia, including the Kurzeme coast, Jurmala, Valmiera, Cesis, Ligatne, Tervete and other places. This shows that Latvia has many wonderful places where you can enjoy high quality cuisine and hospitality.

Awards and recognition from the Michelin Guide are an important international sign of quality and can attract the attention of both local gourmets and tourists who want to experience the taste delights of Latvia.
