Vidzemes Market in Riga is entering a new chapter. Over the next few years, this historic site at Brīvības iela 90A is expected to undergo a major transformation — not simply into a renovated market, but into a lively urban destination shaped by retail, food, culture and everyday city life. The concept is planned for full completion by the end of 2028, while market activity is expected to continue throughout the reconstruction period.
With a history stretching back nearly 150 years, Vidzemes Market carries far more than commercial value. Its renewal is also about bringing new life to a place deeply rooted in Riga’s memory. Development rights for the next 30 years were granted to SIA “GD&L Services”, and the planned investment into the pavilions and surrounding outdoor area is set at no less than €11.5 million.
The work will unfold in stages. From 2026, the first phase will include the removal of outdated kiosks, restoration of the paving and reconstruction of the historic Meat Pavilion. Further stages will bring new trading spaces, upgrades to the canopy, parking, façade restoration, new engineering systems, landscaping, and finally the renewal of the administrative building and the historic Milk Pavilion.
What makes the project especially interesting is the vision behind it. The future market is intended to bring together local produce, dining, exhibitions, concerts and public life in one setting. The central green square will be redesigned as a more welcoming public area, and the concept clearly states that large supermarket chains and franchise operators are not planned for the site. Instead, priority is meant for Latvian farmers, local producers and artisans. That is why the project feels larger than a renovation alone — it is an attempt to shape a place with identity, rhythm and real urban character.
