Riga TV Tower Enters a New Stage of Transformation

28-04-2026

The reconstruction project of the Riga Radio and Television Tower in Zaķusala has reached another important milestone. The interior design concept competition has been completed, with SIA “Vincents” taking first place for its proposal under the motto “XIX919”.

The competition was organised by LVRTC in cooperation with the Latvian Association of Architects. Its purpose was to develop a high-quality interior design concept for the tower — one that would combine contemporary design, public accessibility, educational value and respect for the building’s original interior elements as part of its historical identity.

According to the jury, the winning proposal offers a professional, coherent and well-balanced solution. It successfully brings together the functionality of the Riga Radio and Television Tower, the identity of LVRTC and a contemporary interior language. The concept was praised for its clear narrative, thoughtful spatial planning, logical visitor flow, harmonious selection of materials and colours, as well as the integration of technology and lighting into a unified architectural story.

Second place was awarded to the concept “Gaismā” by SIA “xcelsior”, while third place went to “Signāls un klusums”, developed by SIA “MUUD” and SIA “u-e-s”. The competition was announced in November 2025 and received six submissions. The total prize fund amounted to EUR 15,000.

Following the announcement of the results, LVRTC may begin negotiations with the awarded participants. During this stage, project conditions can be clarified, and, if an agreement is reached, a procurement contract may be signed for the development of the interior design project and author supervision.

The broader reconstruction process is also moving forward. In 2024, LVRTC launched the procurement for the redevelopment of the Riga TV Tower and the technical-administrative building in Zaķusala. The selection of construction companies has now been completed: all applicants have been recognised as meeting the qualification requirements and have submitted their financial and technical offers. These proposals are currently being evaluated. The construction contract is expected to be signed in 2026, with construction works also planned to begin this year. The project is expected to take approximately three years.

Once completed, the Riga TV Tower is set to become not only an important technical facility, but also a new public destination. One of the viewing levels is planned to feature glass cubes extending beyond the tower structure, allowing visitors to experience the height in a more immersive way. An open observation deck will be available at over 130 metres, while adrenaline seekers will be offered a “walk in the clouds” — access to an open platform at 220 metres with special safety equipment.

The project also includes new workplaces for LVRTC employees, technical rooms and the necessary technological infrastructure. The surrounding territory is planned to be landscaped, with rest areas, picnic points and visitor parking.

For Riga, this reconstruction is more than the renewal of one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. It reflects a wider urban direction - one focused on quality public spaces, architectural identity, modern visitor experience and long-term city value. Projects of this scale strengthen Riga’s appeal not only as a place to live and visit, but also as a city with growing investment and lifestyle potential.
